cities-copy.jpgThis blog is a little late, but it’s not my fault… Technology is here to make our lives easier, right? Wrong.  If my lap top at home was not so complicated this would have been finished on time. I would be able to access word press and happily type away while watching TV and re-heating my dinner in the microwave, see three technologies all working away in harmony with one person controlling it all. Unfortunately this was not to be. I was unable to  get into word press because I had to change my cookie settings. Cookies, isn’t that something you have with a coffee or at Mrs. Fielders, you know the ones dipped in chocolate. I thought to myself, I can do this no stress, google has found the instruction page for me and it will be a piece of cake. Three days later the cookie still has the better of me, with no resolution in sight. The computer should make our lives easier but now there needs to be blocks and fire walls to keep the other people and their evil technologies out  so not as to ruin ours.  Perhaps I will need to bring my lap top with me and Jules can fix it, I know I can’t.  Now I am forced to sit in a computer lab with people I do not know, all talking too loudly, cough without covering their mouths and generally being annoying, all to use the technology to make our lives simpler!

So the blog will now be finished. I can ask questions about Alpaville. For instance why is it one man with one gun and one round of bullets can take down an evil empire in a days work when all the modern technology has been used to brainwash a race of humans. And why is it the old ugly man always gets the hot young girl?

The frustrations of our technology keep us on our toes and to always be one step ahead. Perhaps it is time to stop and smell the flowers!

mixed messages

Who knew with the 20th century explosion of news paper, cinema, radio and television the various ways of communication would end up where it is today? From simple illustrations on cave walls to tell stories, one colour printing press, black and white photographs, silent movies to the various methods available to users now, can the question be asked, are we loosing touch with communication?

New ways to communicate are being developed to make a our very busy lives simple, then why am I feeling a little confused and out of touch? Mobile phones are great if you need to contact someone when you are running late or have an emergency but unfortunately falling into the hands of a drunk person at 4 am can upset a good nights sleep. Text is a useful and almost non guilt way to council a meeting if you do not want to talk to the person, the down side is abriviations one can not understand and can take twice as long to decipher, still wondering what the person is talking about. Emails connect you with family and friends around the world but can also open a new world of unwanted porn and spam!  There is messaging where you can type with various people and have short, brief and abbreviated chatter.

What ever happened to catching up for a coffee? Going for drinks on a Friday night after work? Popping around to someones house to say hello. If humans crave conversation, interaction and socialising then why are we choosing to do it in a non personalised way. Conversing with friends about one subject, only to wonder off on a different tangent about something unrelated is what face to face communication is all about. Being able to take your time to put you point across and describe your thoughts through words rather than symbols and receiving feedback and hearing what another person has to say.  This is how  friendships are built and you won’t have to worry about any mixed messages!

writers block!

March 5, 2007

For the technically challenged, and the reserved person, being asked to start a blog is more than a little bit of a daunting task.  Firstly there is navigating your way around blog sites to get a feel of ‘what is out there’. After investigating a few I was curious as to who does blogs, people with no television, little outdoor or indoor social life, computer geeks, frustrated writers wanting to reach the masses in cyber space ( because the enormity of cyber space sounds so much bigger than global or international ),  or perhaps individuals who share a common interest  in interests?

I found the goth blog rather interesting if not a little disturbing, in the funny, not quite right way. I am not sure if it was the photograph of Amanda Vanderstone as Elvira, she looked a little top heavy. Or the fact that someone devotes that much personal time on such a project. Is she a goth with a sense of humor or a frustrated politician

Then you need to share a few personal details. I do not do details with people I do not know. Didn’t your mother tell you never to talk to strangers. Whats the difference with putting your personals out into cyber space? Maybe it’s OK, you can remain faceless if you choose. Or if anyone crazy does start to annoy you , change email and blogg address, crisis averted.

Now I need to write about my life or say something, anything……..

Well, it has taken me an hour to perform these tasks. Some may call them simple and wonder why such an activity has consumed so much time? Now comes the hard part, I actually have to give you a story.  This is where the writers block has kicked in……
